In Ireland, the cost of owning a Tesla versus a petrol or diesel car has become a frequent topic of debate. While Tesla vehicles typically have a higher upfront purchase price, they offer significant savings over time. One of the biggest advantages is the lower cost of electricity compared to petrol or diesel. For example, charging a Tesla at home during off-peak hours can cost as little as €5 for a full charge, whereas filling a tank of petrol or diesel could cost upwards of €80-100, depending on fuel prices. Additionally, many Irish Tesla owners benefit from the government’s EV home charger grant, which provides €300 towards the installation of a home charging station.
Tesla vehicles also have fewer moving parts than traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, leading to significantly lower maintenance costs. No more oil changes, fuel filters, or exhaust systems to worry about. Additionally, regenerative braking extends the life of brake pads, meaning fewer replacements and lower service costs. According to some studies, EV owners in Ireland could save up to 30-50% on annual maintenance compared to petrol car owners.
Government incentives in Ireland have made EV ownership more appealing, but it’s worth noting that the grant amounts have been reduced recently. Previously offering up to €5,000, the current grants for electric vehicles now stand at €3,500, which still helps reduce the overall purchase cost. While the reduction may be disappointing, it's better than no support at all. Additionally, there is still Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) relief. These incentives, coupled with EVs' lower running costs, still make Tesla ownership a smart financial choice for Irish drivers.
